How to choose a good inclusion aide
The fit between the aide and the child is the single most important factor in successful inclusion. Here's what to check and ask.
Good questions for an introductory meeting
- What experience do you have with children with a similar need?
- How do you handle challenging moments (e.g. emotional overwhelm, refusal, social difficulty)?
- How do you see collaboration with the educational team and the parents?
- What is your availability over the year?
Good signs
- Listening to the child and the parents, not just “quick fixes”.
- An approach that encourages independence rather than dependence.
- Open, ongoing communication with the parents and the team.
It's about fit, not just experience
A very experienced aide won't always be the right fit for a particular child. Give weight to the chemistry with the child and to mutual trust.
